110+ Years of Groundbreaking Logistics

A chronological timeline showing how our agility, engineering capabilities, and commitment to global trade shaped one of the world's most enduring freight forwarding groups.

1913

WTA Established by Ernest Sommer

Ernest Sommer establishes the World Transport Agency Ltd in London with a mission to simplify international commerce through precision carriage and custom solutions.

Our very first commercial contract involved transporting natural ice blocks from Alpine Switzerland to the UK—a delicate feat of temperature-management and rapid transit long before contemporary refrigerated containers existed.

Recognition by The Industrial World

"Transport paves the way for commerce, it is the lifeblood of industry... the World Transport Agency Ltd under the Chairmanship of Mr Ernest Sommer has made vast strides since its inception in 1913."

WTA gained prominent recognition across post-WWI British trade circles for expediting continental trade recovery and establishing early standard operating procedures for secure customs transit.

1950

Second-Generation Leadership & Multimodal Shift

Ownership transferred to John Sommer. Under his vision, WTA transformed into a dynamic multimodal forwarder, establishing early air and ocean shipping lanes connecting Europe, Canada, Australia, and West Africa (Ghana).

As official logistics agents for British Railways following nationalisation in the late 1940s, WTA spearheaded regular continental rail corridors, importing essential foodstuffs and Italian delicacies into central London.

1960

Pioneering European Road Freight & Global Expansion

When overland cross-border trade restrictions lifted across post-war Europe in the mid-1950s, WTA was among the very first logistics providers to inaugurate scheduled international road freight corridors.

Throughout the 1960s, scheduled services expanded transcontinentally to North America, the Far East, New Zealand, Spain, and Portugal, securing critical factory supply chains.

1980

Full Digitalisation & Freight Management Focus

Recognising the vital role of computing power in supply chain predictability, WTA fully digitised and networked its core customs and tracking architecture across all UK and overseas hubs, pioneering end-to-end freight management.

1994

Third-Generation Leadership: Charles & Paul Sommer

After 44 distinguished years as Chairman, John Sommer passed leadership to his sons, Charles and Paul Sommer. Under their guidance, WTA pivoted heavily towards bespoke, client-centric supply chain architecture and specialist industrial verticals.

Industry Accolades & Direct Presence in Asia and the USA

WTA earned top industry honours at the British International Freight Association (BIFA) Awards for outstanding Australian services, training excellence, air freight forwarding, and logistics management.

To provide Western importers with seamless upstream quality control, WTA inaugurated direct offices in Hong Kong (2006), Shanghai (2007), and Chicago, USA (2007), anchoring transatlantic and transpacific trade lanes.

2013 – 2015

Centenary Celebrations & Fourth-Generation Board

WTA marked 100 years of international trade stewardship. Fourth-generation family members Rochelle Sommer and John Sommer joined the Group Board, guaranteeing cultural continuity and independence.

Recognised as "Family Business of the Year" by Family Business United, WTA further broadened its manufacturing footprint in southern China with a new logistics facility in Shenzhen.

Digital Visibility Platform & Middle East Expansion

WTA launched the proprietary Control Tower visibility tool—now the WTA Visibility Platform—delivering AI-assisted tracking, predictive delay alerts, and automated ESG carbon analytics free of charge to customers.

In 2023, WTA Logistic Services opened in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, strategically positioned 30 minutes from Jebel Ali Port to connect Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) trade flows with European and Asian manufacturing centres.

2025

Strategic Expansion: Europe, Energy Logistics & CEO Tom Sommer

WTA Group welcomed Tom Sommer as Chief Executive Officer. The Group launched WTA Netherlands and established WTA Energy—specialising in complex logistics for offshore renewables, oil & gas, and energy infrastructure across Aberdeen, Singapore, Dubai, and Malaysia.
